Argentina Takes First Step Toward NATO Partnership

Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană met Argentine Defence Minister Luis Petri

WEB Argentina has requested to join NATO as a global partner, a status that would clear the way for greater political and security cooperation.

The meeting took place at NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Tuesday, October 11, and was the first high-level meeting between NATO and Argentina. During the meeting, the two sides discussed Argentina's request to become a global partner of NATO, as well as other issues of mutual interest.

Argentina's request to become a global partner of NATO is a significant step for the country, which is not a member of the alliance. Global partners are countries that are not members of NATO but that share the values and goals of the alliance and that can contribute to NATO's operations. Argentina would be the first country in Latin America to become a global partner of NATO.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after the meeting that he welcomed Argentina's request to become a global partner. "Argentina is a key country in Latin America, and we are committed to working together to address the common security challenges that we face," Stoltenberg said.

Argentine Defence Minister Luis Petri said that Argentina's request to become a global partner of NATO is a "historic step" for the country. "We believe that this partnership will allow us to contribute to global security and to strengthen our relationship with NATO," Petri said.

Argentina's request to become a global partner of NATO is subject to approval by the North Atlantic Council, which is the alliance's governing body. The North Atlantic Council is expected to consider Argentina's request at its next meeting in December.
